Maria is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and student. This May she will hold a B.F.A in dance with a focus on performance and choreography from Wayne State University in Midtown, Detroit. Her dance training has primarily consisted of Modern, Ballet, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, and she is interested in improvisation and choreography.
In her four years at Wayne, Maria has had technical training under faculty such as Biba Bell, Meg Paul, Brandon Koepsell, Lisa LaMarre, Molly Shanahan and more.
Currently, she is a member of Melodic Nocturne Dance Tribe where she trains under Devon Campbell.
ARTISTIC BELIEF STATEMENT
As a creative artist, I find dance to be the most important practice which can express my unique individuality in the world and encourage others of theirs’. My work should be true and reflect how I feel in an artistic, spiritual or social sense. The dances I create are diverse and changing, in the content and material as well as the dancers themselves. Physically, I am inspired when working with visual patterns, pathways and connections through the body and how that can translate into something deeper to be understood. Dance has served in many lives as a saving grace and a means of dealing with pain or bringing comfort. Through creative dance innovation, I hope to bring more of my own love and understanding to the world in a nonconventional, hectic and radical approach to choreography and performance.
